What the Bounce Forward Plan Actually Teaches (And Why It Works)

info May 20, 2026

The Day the Door Opens

Imagine it is your first morning out.

You have been counting down to this day for years. Maybe a decade. Maybe longer. The night before, you barely slept. You ran through the plan in your head the people you would call, the places you would go, the version of yourself you promised you would become.

And then the door opens.

And the world outside does not look the way it did in your head. It moves faster. It speaks a different language. Everyone around you seems to know the rules to a game you were never taught. You have your motivation that part is real, that part is burning, but motivation does not tell you where to sleep tonight. It does not tell you how to open a bank account when every form asks for an address you do not have yet. It does not tell you what to say when an employer asks about the gap in your resume.

This is the moment that determines everything. Not the release date. Not the good intentions. This moment right here, when reality arrives and the plan you had in your head meets the world as it actually is.

Most people who return home from incarceration are not failing because they lack the will to change. They are struggling because nobody gave them the blueprint.

That is the problem Bounce Forward Plan: Mastering Your Reentry was built to solve.

From a Prison Cell to a Framework

Aaron Smith knows that moment intimately.

Before founding Escape The Odds Media & Education, Aaron served nearly a decade in federal prison. He had a business degree. He had intelligence, drive, and a network of people around him who were equally sharp. And sitting inside, watching men return home full of intention only to come back months later, he kept asking himself the same question: why?

It was not a lack of desire. It was a lack of a system.

When Aaron came home in 2019, he did not just start a podcast or a program. He started paying attention closely to the exact moments where people fell through the cracks. The housing barriers nobody warned them about. The financial system that felt built to exclude them. The relationships that needed rebuilding but no one had ever modeled. The entrepreneurship dreams that never had a roadmap.

He built the Bounce Forward Plan around every single one of those gaps.

As Aaron puts it:

"Too many people return home with motivation but no blueprint. I wanted to create the kind of guidance that helps people rebuild their lives with strategy, social capital, and ownership." Aaron Smith, Founder of Escape The Odds

The result is not a pamphlet. It is not a one-day seminar. It is a 15-session, facilitator-guided, institutional reentry curriculum designed to be delivered inside correctional facilities, county jails, community corrections programs, and reentry organizations so that by the time someone walks out that door, they are not starting from zero.

What the Bounce Forward Plan Actually Is

Before we get into what the curriculum teaches, it is worth being precise about what it is because it is different from most programs people have seen inside.

The Bounce Forward Plan is available as a 12-month institutional license. That means it is not a single visit. It is not a guest speaker who comes once and leaves. It is a framework that lives inside your facility delivered repeatedly, to cohort after cohort, with the same structure, the same tools, and the same measured outcomes every time.

Each 12-month license includes:

  • Documentary integration: the curriculum is anchored by the Escaping The Odds of Recidivism documentary, giving participants a powerful narrative foundation before the structured sessions begin
  • Participant workbooks: the physical Bounce Forward Plan workbook that each participant works through across all 15 sessions
  • Facilitation guides: detailed, session-by-session instruction for program staff so delivery is consistent regardless of who leads the room
  • Subject Matter Expert toolkit: resources to bring in outside expertise where it adds depth
  • Evaluation framework: tools to measure participant progress and document program outcomes
  • Reporting and implementation support:  ongoing guidance from the Escape The Odds team throughout the license period

A one-time event can light a spark. The Bounce Forward Plan is designed to carry that spark through 15 structured sessions and turn it into something someone can actually walk out the door with.

What It Actually Teaches: The 7 Focus Areas

The curriculum is built around seven focus areas. Every single one of them was chosen because it represents a real place where people returning home get stuck not in theory, but in practice, in real life, on real days after release.

1. Housing Stability Planning

The first question many people cannot answer when they come home is where they are sleeping tonight. The curriculum addresses housing directly how to navigate the barriers a record creates, what resources exist, and how to plan for stability before release rather than scrambling for it after. Stable housing is not a bonus in this framework. It is the floor.

2. Career Development & Workforce Readiness

Getting a job when you have a record is not the same as getting a job. It requires a different strategy, different language, and a different level of preparation. This focus area builds exactly that giving participants the skills, confidence, and honest framing to pursue second-chance employment and show up ready for the real conversations employers have.

3. Entrepreneurship Awareness

Not everyone wants to work for someone else. And for many people with a record, ownership is not just a dream it is a practical alternative to a job market that can still be hostile. This session introduces business ownership as a real, achievable path and connects directly to Escape The Odds' vocational programs: the Non-CDL Box Truck Entrepreneurship program, the Commercial Cleaning Business Development program, and the House Hacking & Real Estate Fundamentals program. Participants leave knowing that a path to ownership exists and what the first steps look like.

4. Financial Literacy Exercises

Many people return home having never opened a bank account, never built credit, and never managed a budget outside of survival mode. This curriculum does not judge that reality. It starts there and builds forward teaching practical money management, banking basics, credit fundamentals, and how to navigate financial systems that were not designed with formerly incarcerated people in mind.

5. Individualized Reentry Plan Development

This is the thread that runs through all 15 sessions. Every participant builds their own personal reentry plan not a generic document handed to everyone in the room, but a real plan built around their specific circumstances, goals, available resources, and concrete next steps. By the final session, every person has a document they own and can act on.

6. Substance Use & Mental Health

Reentry is hard in ways that are not always visible. The emotional weight of coming home the guilt, the disconnection, the pressure, the grief is real and it derails people who had every intention of succeeding. This focus area acknowledges that weight directly, helps participants identify support systems, and builds the internal resilience that practical plans require to actually work.

7. Rebuilding Healthy Relationships

Who is in your corner when you come home matters as much as what you know and where you sleep. This session helps participants think honestly and strategically about their relationships which ones to invest in, which ones to navigate carefully, how to rebuild trust with family, and how to set boundaries that protect the progress they are working to make.

Designed for Organizations Doing Serious Reentry Work

The Bounce Forward Plan is not built for organizations looking for something to check a box. It is built for institutions and programs doing sustained, committed reentry work specifically:

  • Departments of Corrections
  • County Jails
  • Community Corrections programs
  • Reentry-focused organizations

If your organization has already hosted the Escaping The Odds of Recidivism Film Impact Series, the Bounce Forward Plan is the natural next step. The film opens something in a room. The curriculum builds on it session by session, week by week, until the insight the film created becomes a plan the participant owns.

The two are designed to work together. And for organizations that want to go from awareness to implementation, that combination is exactly the bridge.

Real People. Real Results.

The most compelling proof of what the Bounce Forward Plan teaches is not a brochure. It is the people who sat in those sessions, did the work, and came home to build something real.

"After spending 15 years incarcerated, I returned home determined to rebuild my life. With guidance from mentors like Aaron Smith and support from Escaping the Odds, I learned how to structure and build my own trucking business. Today, I operate one truck and two trailers and am working toward purchasing a second truck. I'm grateful for the second chance God gave me to come home, rebuild, and make a positive impact in society."  Kwante W., Program Graduate, California

"This has been the best experience of classes and programs in prison. This course gives the first steps needed to get started."’  Program Participant, Tennessee Correctional Facility

"This course has made it very easy. With the information I can actually begin the process while incarcerated." Program Participant, Mississippi Correctional Facility

"It has prepared me to start my journey and also changed my perception of thinking small. Dream big and go hard. Grind strong!"  Londell H., Financial Empowerment Program Graduate

That third testimonial is worth sitting with: while incarcerated. The Bounce Forward Plan does not hand someone a plan on release day and wish them well. It puts the plan in their hands while they are still inside so that day one of freedom is not the first day of figuring it out. It is the first day of executing something they already built.

The Plan Starts Before the Door Opens

Go back to that first morning. The door opens. The world is moving fast. Everything you planned in your head is meeting reality for the first time.

Now imagine you already have a plan in your hands. Not a vague list of intentions a real, personalized, session-built document that maps your housing options, your income pathway, your financial starting point, your support system, and your next thirty days. Built by you, guided by people who have lived this, grounded in real systems and real resources.

That is what the Bounce Forward Plan puts in the hands of every participant before they ever walk out that door.

Rewriting a life does not start on release day. It starts inside with a decision, a structure, and access to the kind of knowledge most justice-impacted people were never given.

The Bounce Forward Plan: Mastering Your Reentry exists to make sure the next person who comes home does not have to figure it out alone.

They come home with a plan. They come home ready to execute.

That is what Escape The Odds is building. And that is what the Bounce Forward Plan teaches.
